Complementary Feeds
Foods other than breast milk or infant formula to be introduced to an infant after completion of 6 months to provide extra nutrients.
Food should bePacked with energy and nutrients, Easy to digest, Clear and safe
- Medicines to be supplemented from outside Calcium, Iron and Vitamin-D3
- Initially introduce small quantity new food one at a time.
- Within 1 year of life is the most favourable period to develop healthy eating habits, as babies are more receptive to new taste.
- Pure cow’s milk to be started only after 1 year (If no allergy, wheeze or family history of Asthma)
- Smells of different food in early part of newborn and even during pregnancy will be recognised and accepted by baby after 6months of life when same food are being introduced.
- Salt and sugar addition will be either no or minimal
- Till now baby knows only milk, now you have to introduce different food to baby.
Introduce liquid like Veg soup, Juice, Dal soup and water
then switch over gradually to gentle, semiliquid easy to digest food like – cereal/ rice- kheer, Dal then Semisolids like boiled mashed veggies like Pumpkin, Carrot, Potato, papaya and banana , Mashed fruits like ripped Mango, banana and Boiled mashed Apple. Dalma- Dal with different veggies, Spinach puree.
Khichdi, Dalia, Upma, Idli , Chakuli/ Chilla, Roti- Dal, Chakuli- Dal, Rice- Dalma
Grinded Nuts mixed with gram and wheat flour can be started(homemade Chatua)
Non Veg- Scrambled/ Boiled egg , Chicken soup and soft mashed cooked fish
Veg- Paneer, mixed veg, Curd
Feed two or more fruitsor vegetables mixed together, like mashed potato and carrot,
- Every time try different home based food so that baby will be fit to take regular home based food from 1 year onward.
- Try to find out choice of food habit
- Avoid- Forceful feeding, stop when baby is full
- Give 3-4 hrs gap between foods
- Baby should be excited on seeing foods
