Cough is a reflex response of the respiratory tract to stimulation of irritant or cough receptors in the airways’ mucosa.
1. Allergy to any substance eg.
- Dust
- Spider
- Cockroach
- Blanket dust.
are common viral infection
2. Reactive airways(Asthma)- recurrent or persistent cough
3. Bacterial infection- Pneumonia
4. Foreign body aspiration
5. Gastroesophageal reflux
6. Psychogenic cough- older children
- High grade fever
- Persistent cough
- Cough with disturb night sleep
- All cough doesn’t require antibiotics.
- Need to be treated as per cause.
- Simple dry and irritative cough in older kids can be brought down by sips of water.
- Breathlessness
- High grade fever
- Feeding difficulty (including choking and vomiting)
- Blood tinged expectoration
- Abnormal sounds during inspiration or expiration.
